no. 001 [video from new bark town.]
[A Sableye isn't exactly the first thing most people want to see when they check the network, with its gleaming eyes and wide, sharp smile. This one doesn't seem intent on being creepy or mischievous today, though. Even for those that don't speak pokémon, the raspy growls have the characteristic lilt of a genuine question.]
Hey! How do I get my trainer to trust me? I'm trying to show him around, but...
[He moves the video over to a young boy who's frowning and feeling his way along the outer wall of Mom's house. He's got what appears to be a makeshift blindfold on, if the frayed edges are any indication, and quite the unusual ensemble...
As the video bounces closer in, Emil's frown deepens and he waves as if to shoo the creature off.]
He keeps doing that!
[At least Emil seems satisfied with the distance the Sableye had retreated to again, exhaling out a sigh and going back to his slow mapping out of the area.]
I hope I find the others soon... Where is this, anyway?

Is your trainer blind? Because if so, you trainer needs one of those red and white sticks. Blind humans use those.
Could also be that your trainer doesn't like how your skin feels. Humans can be so picky about stuff like that.
[The other comment gets his shoulders to sag.]
Oh... My skin? Everyone at the lab must have been okay with it. Does that mean I'll never get him to trust me?
[She tilts her head and thinks.]
Your human will trust you. You just gotta show him that you're not bad! Get him a present or something! There's flowers outside. And fish. Maybe some bugs. If you had socks, I'd say give him socks.
Socks... Yes, okay! I'll find him a stick and something nice!
[Though he wasn't keen on leaving his trainer, if it got the boy to trust him, then it would definitely be worth it! The 'gear jostles along with him as he makes his way over to the nearby route and up a tree.]
You sound like you know a lot about trainers! Have you had yours for a long time?
Since I let her catch me! So.... months! I am one of her first. She's very nice and dances with me.
There's a lot of other trainers, too. Though not all nice. They don't know I can read their minds. I keep my trainer away from the bad ones. The bad ones always act the nicest in a way you can tell is fake.
[That there are bad trainers though... That was news to him. Though he supposed there were bad pokémon, too. The 'gear is moved to the Sableye's mouth, making his words a bit muffled as he talks around it, so he can focus on not falling as he climbs.]
Oh... Are you a psychic type? Can you read my mind? I'm part dark type.
[At least she doesn't have to smell his breath. That would make her very unhappy.]
I am. I don't like reading others minds unless I have to. I can read a dark types mind, but that's because I know Chiisai well and she let me practice on her. She's an Umbreon. You'd like her.
Oh... That's cool.
[Gotta...reach for a branch... Hmmn, it's pretty twiggy. That wouldn't be much help.]
I've never seen an Umbreon before. I hope I get to with my trainer. [Aha! This one should work.] Is your trainer nice to her, too?
Of course she's nice with her! My trainer is nice to every Pokémon she meets! She loves us all~!
That's good! [He seems genuinely relieved. After all, trainers couldn't be so different, could they?] Hey -- was she like this with any of you?
[He snaps a branch off -- it's a good size, if a little lacking in length. He positions it in front of the camera for the Meowstic to inspect.]
Do you think he can use this one?
[She nods a few times.]
Yes! Just break off the smaller branches so he doesn't hurt himself!
Oh, right! Gosh, you're really smart.
[It takes him a little longer, with how meticulous he is about smoothing out jagged breaks. It didn't look like there were any socks around, so he'd just have to make it the best stick ever.
When he's satisfied, the Sableye hops down and drags the stick over to Emil to offer it with a wide, expectant grin. Whatever he's hoping for when the boy roughly takes it away from him doesn't happen. Emil gets a look of concentration for a second, but when nothing happens he lets out a frustrated huff and -- bonk! Down comes the stick on the creature's head.]
Yowch!
Don't come any closer, you hear me!
And while he doesn't have his Psychic type with him, he does have his Yanma out. One of his friendlier types, thankfully, making it easier for Kaneki to ask the Pokemon to talk to the Sableye for him. He won't be able to translate, but...
The Yanma chitters in rapid clicks while perched on Kaneki's shoulder.]
Hello hello! My trainer says that yours has something covering his eyes. He cannot see you! He probably does not know that you are his partner.
[He pauses, tilting his head to the side as Kaneki murmurs something else to him.]
Can you get any closer to him?
I...can try... He doesn't like it when I do.
[Still, he inches closer, a little more cautious than before. It isn't quite enough to be considered sneaking, and Emil's head whips to face the camera almost immediately.]
I said to go away!
Oh- okay...he says stay where you are!
[As he says that, Kaneki switches from video to audio and calls out as loud as he can without yelling, hoping that the Sableye is close enough so he can be heard.]
Hello? Can you hear me?
I can hear you. [He leaves the wall, but doesn't stray too far. Normally he was pretty good at these things, but...] Where are you?
no subject
I'm...I'm not quite where you are, right now. But I can hear you, too.
There's something that keeps trying to get closer to you. It won't hurt you.
no subject
[His frown deepens, but at least he's focused in on the voice. Definitely in the creature's direction, including how low it was to the ground.]
...It's a Shade. I've -- I've seen them do terrible things.
no subject
I see. The creature with you is...similar, but they won't hurt you. I know it's probably hard to believe just what a voice is telling you...and you don't have to.
[He takes a slow breath before continuing.]
You're not in the same area you were before. This is an entirely different world from your own.
no subject
Another world... [It wasn't that hard to believe. Things were already pretty messed up from what they were supposed to be, and there was something like a memory buried deep that made it even easier to accept.
He pulls a face when his fingers make contact with the Sableye's skin, quickly moving them to take the device instead of lingering. The thing still gave him the creeps, but already the boy's tone is more sociable.] Ah, there. Your voice is from this, right? My name's Emil.
no subject
[If he's picked up the Gear, then that means he's allowed the Sableye to get close, so that's good. He wouldn't want to see this boy trying to make it through an unfamiliar area alone like he is.]
I'm Kaneki.
no subject
Oh. Thank you. [It's sincere, but Emil's gone back to looking concerned.] Are you...still able to see me?
no subject
[He wonders for a very brief moment if he should switch back to video, too, until he remembers that it probably won't matter anyway.]
There are settings that can turn that off, though.
no subject
I need you to tell me how to turn it off. A-and make it so it - stop that!
[Apparently the Sableye is getting grabby, with how he pulls the 'gear sharply.]
Is there a way to make it like... [Augh, his head. There was something he was thinking of, wasn't there? What was the word...] Um... Well, like how yours is, I guess? But stuck that way.
no subject
[He looks down at his own Gear as he talks, running his fingers along the face so he can feel the buttons. There are buttons for pretty much everything here, as well as a switch for shifting between video and audio.]
There should be a switch on the...right side of it. Yours is on video right now, so it's probably pushed down. If you push it up, it will turn off and go to Audio only instead.
[He knows there are probably internal settings that could potentially make more permanent changes like that, but honestly he's never really messed with them too much.]
