[It's been two weeks and a lot of trouble for young Emil, navigating with his blindfold. The unfamiliar setting was hard enough, but with rain on top of that? At least he'd accepted the Sableye after a few days and had time in Cherrygrove to unwind. He's gone out again now, though the image he shares with the network shows him indoors and in dry clothes -- he'd had to change back into the clothes he'd arrived in, soaked as he was from the day's rain. It's a little blurry, definitely not something that would win awards, but it's still enough to show a Meowth egg settled in his lap and that was the idea. Well, that and testing out the 'gear's functions to see if he'd gotten it right and he really could attach a picture to his voice.]

So this...really isn't a mistake? This egg will really hatch into a cat?

[He makes a thoughtful noise, switching to a tone that sounds more like he's musing to himself.]

I don't really know how many things come out of eggs back home -- like this, I mean, with a shell and everything. Definitely not cats. But I look forward to it, if it's true!

[There's the soft clatter of glass being set onto a table before the feed abruptly cuts out, but it's only an hour or so before another picture shows up with the same voice accompanying it -- softer though, warmer. The photo shows the young boy eating and laughing with an older man that some might be able to recognize as Mr. Pokemon. Well, honestly the image is mostly table, like something small had taken the picture instead of another trainer. Emil might not have known Stilzchen was playing with the camera again, but...he's glad he did, if he gets to have this memory to share.]

It's been raining a lot, but...that's okay. People here are really nice. Nicer than I ever expected...

Even the friendly people back home were never this welcoming towards me. Is this just how other worlds are? I wonder... [He seems to remember then that he's not just recording his thoughts for himself and clears his throats.] They did have a good reason, so maybe it's just me. What were your worlds like for you?

Mmm, yeah, I noticed that too when I came here. Everyone here's nice. [Henry grins.] But then, I also found out the other day that apparently my entire home country was full of jerks, so... [SHRUG]

Maybe there are just some homeworlds that really, really suck.

Oh! To answer your question from before, eggs hatching into mammals is just kind of a thing that happens here. It seems weird, but you get used to it in time. [Henry holds up a pale grey Espurr egg of his own.] See this one? This is gonna hatch into a Pokémon too, soon.

O-oh... [It must have been pretty bad for them to actually be labelled as jerks...] I'm sorry to hear that -- but at least you're here now, right?

[And then he just...kind of pauses, and touches the switch that controls the audio/video function to make sure it's still set in place and he hasn't been accidentally broadcasting a live feed of his face.]

Actually, I can't. I keep my eyes covered. [Switching to a brighter tone -- ] What sort of pokemon will it be, if you don't mind me asking?

Yep! Here now. I think I'd rather be here than over there, anyway, even though my world does have its high points. [Like dragon-people and bunny-people. Those guys were pretty cool.]

Well, it's gonna be an Espurr, which is like a little psychic kitty with huge eyes! They're really cute.

Speaking of eyes, why're you covering yours?

I'd like to hear about them, if you ever feel like telling me! I think I knew about other worlds, but this is my first time going to one. Other than the fact that they exist, I'm really clueless about it all, so it's nice to learn about all these other places while I have the chance.

[But he did hesitate a little, wondering if he was going to wind up bringing bad memories into the mix. That'd be no good...]

Oh! So we're both getting kitties! That's kind of funny.

I...really hate my eyes. [Getting into it, when so many people had been nice to him, and there should be no trouble with them over the 'gear...] I've gotten used to wearing my blindfold, so you don't have to worry about that! It's better for everyone this way.

Hmm? But why do you hate them? You can't even see them!

[Sure, he'll tell you about the (comparatively few) cool parts of Plegia and Ylisse, but clearly this stranger's eyes are a much more pressing issue right now.]

[There's really no avoiding it, is there... Well, he'd hate to lie, anyway, so here goes...]

They...turn things to stone. I'd found a way to control it, but now... I'm not sure how they are. I don't want to hurt anyone.

Ooh! [Henry nods in understanding.] That's pretty cool! I've read about stuff like that, but never seen it happen in real life.

Though if you're worried about accidentally stoning people [ugh], it'll probably be fine. When I got here, they took away all my magic. Everyone else I talked to said the same thing. They basically turn you into a human from whatever you were before.

Of course, there's still the chance you'd-- [Henry seems to realize midsentence what he's saying, and quickly clamps his mouth shut.] ...you'd.... nya ha ha! Never mind.

[IT'S NOT COOL IT'S HORRIBLE is what he wants to say, but he manages to restrain himself.]

I...could tell, when I arrived. That I had changed. [Pretty hard not to notice, to be honest. Thinking about Henry's words just makes his mood keep spiraling on downward, though.] That's not really something I can test. Maybe my eyes are fine, but... They might not be! Until I have a way to turn them back, I can't risk having anyone going through that. Not again...

Uh... hm... [Henry props his chin on one hand, thinking.] ...wow, you're right, that is a bit of a rough spot.

Anyway. [Neither of them like talking about this topic, so let's just not talk about it anymore! Brilliant!] You wanted to know all about the cool stuff in my homeworld, right?

[Hey, Emil can work with that strategy.]

I do, yes. [Can you hear how hard he's trying to not sound miserable, he's trying pretty hard.] And...you said you can use magic, too? Is that normal, where you're from?

Oh, you don't have magic? Magic is the best thing about my world, hands-down! [It's hardly ever clear whether Henry's cheerfulness is fake or not, but at least he looks like he's having fun.] It's pretty normal! Not like a secret hidden art or anything. I mean, you can even study it like any other profession. And that's what I do!

We do, but...

[Those that could use it...had pretty unusual circumstances...]

Not on that level. That's really amazing! I never imagined I'd meet someone like that, you know? Is it hard?

Hard? No wa-- ...well, okay, maybe it is kind of hard. But that's mostly because of all the book work you have to do along with the actual casting of magic. That always came easy for me because my innate magic is super high, but I'm pretty sure that studying is always a drag.

Do you think --

[He cuts himself off a moment, then takes a deep breath and continues.]

I know...you can't use magic here, and most if not all of mine is gone, too, but... Do you think you could teach me things? Like...about controlling magic. The things that came easy for you.

Oh, sure! I love talking about magic! [He sounds pretty excited...!] It might be hard to show you practice, but I can tell you about the theory, at least!

[Oh! Then he can sound excited, too!]

That's great! I mean, I don't want to cause trouble for you, but if it's really okay, then I'd love that! Finding information on magic is really hard, back home. Even in the old days, people didn't understand it. So to have someone like you around... I think it will really help.

It's nothing. If anything, it gives me something fun to do.

Sooo... there's lots of uses for magic! Some people can use it for random mundane stuff, I guess, but I'm a military mage so nobody ever told me about that. All I know are the types that are used in battle. There's two different types of offensive magic, anima and dark. The easy way to remember it is that anima magic controls all the things that you can see with the naked eye, like the elements -- fire, wind, water, and so on. And dark magic controls all the stuff you can't see, like life force or luck or other powers beyond normal comprehension. It's really dangerous, though, so if you want to study dark magic you gotta really know your stuff. If you mess up a curse, it usually ends really badly for you, unlike with anima magic where you just... don't summon the element, or whatever.

Oh! And there's also light magic, which is kind of like dark magic in that it focuses on life force. But it restores health to people, not take it away. So light magic is where you got all your healing spells for mending wounds, neutralizing poisons, and suchlike, as well as teleportation for some reason? I'm not really sure why teleportation is there, but I guess it counts as a thing you can't see.

[His head bobs along to each point made, listening and sorting it all out in his head, not that Henry can see that anyway. There was definitely a difference... But who's to say that Emil just hadn't encountered that kind of magic before? It wasn't as if many people could use it, and there was so much of the world that he hadn't seen, anyway.]

I guess... It sounds like I could use what you guys call dark and light magic? I've...screwed it up before, so I know how dangerous dark magic can be. That's why I don't really try to do too much with it, when I don't have to -- I don't want to lose control again. Getting to heal the others... That works out better for me, I think. But I'd like to be able to do more for them in battle, too!

Wait, so you can use magic? [That's what you get for jumping to conclusions, Henry.]

Mn. A little bit, normally. My friends Kainé and Nier can, too, though they weren't always able to either, I don't think. It's not really...normal, to be able to, where I'm from.

It was only recently that I was able to start doing real spells instead of having to use my eyes, though, so...I'm really not very good, I'm afraid...

Ooh, that's okay! [Henry waves a hand dismissively.] At least I know you've got the potential. And plus, sometimes there are a couple of days where everyone seems to get their powers and stuff from home back, so on those days we should be sure to meet up and see what you can do.

[He's grinning widely -- and, perhaps more important, genuinely.]

Haha, man... I never thought I'd be getting an apprentice, especially not this early. But I'm so not complaining, nya ha!

[Hearing that makes his chest tighten a little. It lent a bit more credibility to the possibility that his eyes were fine now, but all the disasters that could happen when things switched back to normal were a sobering thought. At least it sounds like Henry would be there to help him out, and maybe he wouldn't care about all the terrible side effects of Emil's powers...]

And I'm happy to be getting a teacher! So hello, my name's Emil and I hope I can be a good first apprentice!

[Henry will probably be there to do what he can. Maybe. Depending on how much of a decent human being he feels like being that day. ...It's kind of a shot in the dark, really.]

Hey, I never gave you my name! [He sounds surprised.] Whoops, that's kind of important. Anyway, I'm Henry.

So, where are you right now? Looks like you're in a house with some... guy... yeah I dunno.

[Names are indeed important, and someone should really be questioning why this ten-year-old agreed to meet some older stranger before any introductions were made but oh well, that's how Emil rolls.]

Yes! People call him Mr. Pokemon. That's not his real name, but he likes it... He lives on Route 30!

Route 30... uh, gimme a second. [Henry puts the phone down, and Emil can hear the muffled sounds of him digging through something -- probably his bag. Eventually, he comes out with what sounds like a map, and folds it out in front of him.] Ohhh, I see where you are. By Cherrygrove, right?
