Emil Timeline.
The following is a rough timeline of Emil's life using this timeline as a reference and supplemented by links found within.
Dates with a * next to them are based on Nier Gestalt, which is the version my Emil is taken from. Further chronological discrepancies will be explained within and preferred timeline dates will be underlined when relevant.
EXTREME SPOILERS FOR NIER AND ITS RELATED WORKS.
2016 - Age 0.
‣ Emil and Halua are likely born, Emil being the younger of the twins.
‣ The Hamelin Organization is formed by the United Nations.
2018 - Age 2.
‣ National Research Weapons Laboratory (Murasaki) is formed by the Japanese government due to growing concerns over the Hamelin Organization.
2024 - Age 8.
‣ Emil and Halua are orphaned. Due to the lack of relatives and their young age, they are recruited by the lab where they are tested for the potential to serve as a magical, ultimate weapon in Project Snow White. They are moved, likely from Germany to Japan, and are taught Japanese instead. An assistant researcher they refer to as Sensei acts as their guardian while overseeing them in an underground facility.
2026 - Age 10.
‣ After losing five other test subjects, Halua is selected and is turned into weapon no. 6 in June, Emil initially kept as a backup in case of failure. The experiment is a success, but Halua goes berserk when fearing for Emil's safety and destroys part of the lab. She is confined temporarily while Emil undergoes the procedure to become weapon no. 7, altering his eyes so that they have the power to petrify others. In a time anywhere from a few hours to a month, Halua breaks free and continues her rampage, injuring or killing researchers (including Sensei) until she is stopped by Emil.
‣ Given the lack of a disposal method, no. 6 is sealed away. Her status as the ultimate weapon causes the petrification to erode over time, and though it is unknown if the process ever needed to be repeated, it is likely that it was not. The facility no longer conducts human experiments with maso due to the high risk. Emil's physical aging process is halted and he remains largely childlike in nature. In September, they begin to disguise the overground facility as the mansion.
See: The Stone Flower.
2049* / 2053 | 2046* / 2050 - Age 33 / 37 | 30 / 34.
‣ Emil remains at the facility, though must now wear a blindfold to avoid petrifying the significantly smaller work staff. Despite this, he does not appear to be hindered or significantly bothered. His interest in music has grown and an assistant researcher (likely the same woman referred to as Sensei) educates him out of regret over his treatment and condition. This, along with treatment of him as an individual, appears to only be tolerated, not sanctioned or encouraged.
‣ Kainé's "grandmother" Kali funds Murasaki research, encouraging the creation of weapons (though is possibly rejected? Unclear.) Red Eye specimens are to be brought in for research, an action opposed by the Murasaki chief but deemed necessary due to the concerns over the Hamelin Organization. However, the facility is invaded and a man named Masayoshi Yura takes control under Kali's orders. Yura kills the chief and threatens to kill the assistant (as well as the other twenty-two employees of the facility) if weapon no. 7 is not handed over to him. Emil interferes despite the assistant's refusal to hand him over, agreeing to do as Yura says to avoid anyone else getting hurt. Angered after a phone call with Kali, Yura attacks (or yells at? Unclear.) the assistant until Emil steps in again. He is strangled and injured with a weapon meant for those possessing maso ("Bible", utilizes maso and meant for use against Legion). Presumably he is taken at this time to Kali's mansion, where Yura and his men have been instructed to guard Kali and her family from the Red Eye.
‣ When attempts to fight the Red Eye have failed, Yura leads it to Kali's mansion so he may use more extreme methods. After another failed attempt, he brings out Emil and orders him to take down the Red Eye, which Emil initially refuses due to the number of people still in the area that would be affected by his ability. Yura removes Emil's blindfold against his will, though after several lives are lost the attack is hindered by Emil's eyes becoming blurred with tears. He is drugged into a berserk state and Yura flees so as to not be sacrificed along with the rest of his men. Yura becomes a fugitive and takes on the name Tyrann.
‣ Emil is stopped along with Kainé, who had also gone on a rampage against the Red Eye, by the original Nier when he refused to leave them behind despite bystander claims that the pair were monsters, instead assuring them that they could stop fighting. Emil is meant to be disposed of after the incident, but due to no safe disposal method for weapon no. 6, he is kept under the care of the facility. This may be when Sebastian is appointed to taking care of Emil, should he be an android.
See: Drama CD Disc 1.
- It is said in the Drama CD notes that Nier (brother) buried his and Yonah's mother in the year 2050 and heard an alarm concerning the attack by the Legion. However, the wiki's timeline gives the first two dates for the time when Nier (father) and Nier (brother) went through the Gestaltization process. It is possible that the above events simply take place three years before that, leaving January 24th of 2046 (gestalt) and 2050 (replicant) as the most likely dates for these events.
2054* / 2058 / 2055 - Age 38 / 45 / 49.
‣ The Murasaki research facility has discontinued weapons research, now instead aiding the Gestalt project with the assistant researcher as the new chief. When she retires she leaves behind a letter to Emil saying that she regretted what had happened to him and had cared for him. She hoped to be thought of as like a mother to Emil. She dies in Seafront at some unknown time, the letter being handed down.
See: Researcher's Letter.
- It has been five years since the original Nier and Yonah were Gestaltized. See previous entry's note. 2054 (gestalt) and 2058 (replicant) are the most likely dates, especially as 2058 is specifically noted in the Drama CD notes.
3361* / 3465 - Age 1345 / 1449.
‣ The events shown in the game Nier begin. Sebastian, wishing to rid Emil of his petrification ability, writes to Yonah under Emil's name for help. Nier, Weiss, and Kainé are enlisted to rid the mansion of Shades so that research may be done more easily. Emil has grown so accustomed to his blindfolded state that he can now identify the age and sex of those around him by their footfalls.
‣ Though statues of people serve as reminders of his guilt in the courtyard of the mansion, Emil uses his ability to aid Nier against the Shades and, though no cure is found, is assured by Kainé that he was blessed with his eyes for a reason. She makes him promise to petrify her should the Shade possessing her, Tyrann, gain control, which he makes good on after Nier's village is attacked by a giant Shade and has to be sealed away. Emil made the run to Nier's village alone, a feat which exhausted him but otherwise left him unharmed.
3366* / 3470 - Age 1350 / 1458.
‣ Emil believes he's found a way to free Kainé from her petrified state, something he had been working towards for five years. Along with Nier and Weiss, he makes his way into the underground research facility he grew up in and remembers his status as weapon no. 7, as well as the fate of his sister. The party finds a now-mobile no. 6 and must battle her while Emil attempts to merge. Halua's spirit, having either gone dormant at the time of petrification or been driven mad over the years, is finally put to rest as she fuses with her brother. While this leaves Emil with immensely powerful magic and an even more resilient body, it also transforms him into a skeleton-like monster much like no. 6 had become when she was the ultimate weapon. Though the villagers fear this change and refuse shelter for Emil, the rest of the party assures him that they don't mind his appearance and he begins to accept himself. It is likely at this time that he falls for Nier and recognizes Kainé as a big sister figure.
‣ Emil, with Nier, Weiss, and Kainé, set about looking for a way to get Yonah back from the Shadowlord (the original, Gestaltized Nier). He sleeps outside with Kainé when not welcomed into villages, citing this as one of the ways she's able to give him strength and a reason why she must stay with them even though Tyrann is at a high risk of fully possessing her. He attends the wedding of the King of Façade and Fyra, apparently excited by the prospect, and assists in all the battles necessary to gather keys to the Shadowlord's castle. In particular, during the battle at the Aerie he exerts himself to the point where he can no longer keep himself under control, and kills not only the Shade hiding there but the remainder of the Aerie's people as the ultimate weapon. He displays grief over this and must be comforted by Nier pointing out that if it hadn't happened, they may have died and so he saved their lives. He also has a small crisis in the battle against Wendy, urging Nier to stop because he believes the Shade(s) to be people, though Nier quiets this and continues the fight.
‣ Inside the Shadowlord's castle, Emil sacrifices himself to yet again save Nier, Weiss, and Kainé. In his farewell, he explains that all his life he had hated something about himself (his eyes, and when those were under control, his body) and was now proud to be able to save instead of destroy. Despite his strong words, he is still afraid to die and fervently wishes to be able to see the others once more.
‣ The explosion of magic does not kill him, but instead causes him to land in the desert as only a head. He begins a journey to regain a body and join up with the others, not knowing of their fates. He spends eighty days attempting this before landing right where he started.
See: Around the World in Eighty Days.
Sometime between 3646* / 3750 and 5012 - Age 1630 / 1738 - 2996.
‣ Emil has gained a mastery over his magic and has constructed a new body for himself out of many unusual, often mechanical parts. The world has become barren of humanity. Aliens invade and attack Emil, though he fends them off with various magic (Emil Beam and Emil Copy, which creates 430 copies of himself and exhausts him. Emil Dash is used prior in defense against wild boars.)
See: Drama CD Disc 2, Track 3.
- These events take place 280 years after the passing of Nier and Kainé, however the wiki timeline states that aliens invade in 5012. Ending shenanigans may be afoot, but it could also be that the UFO Emil fended off was simply a scout and the true invasion didn't happen until much later. I'm not going to take these dates seriously enough to give a definitive answer. Because it's aliens.
